Although digital video recorders or DVRs are the center of power stations for digital video security and surveillance systems, CCTV video servers can be considered as their peers. The main difference between the two is that CCTV video servers are dedicated to the Internet.

A typical digital video security and surveillance system works as follows:

1. The digital camera captures the video image and sends it to the DVR (or point monitor) via a video transmission cable (the cable here is usually RG59).

2. The DVR processes the video data; it compresses it using a codec (compression/decompression) utility that reduces the size of the file but maintains the high quality of the video image.

3. The DVR records the video to a hard drive or HDD and displays the image on the monitor.

In the above example, the system is usually independent of a particular geographic area because the camera must be connected to the DVR via a cable. There are wireless cameras and other devices, but in most cases these systems are still in a specific location.

The CCTV video server is used as an auxiliary device for the old analog system. A typical analog video security monitoring system with a CCTV video server works as follows:

The analog (or digital) camera captures the video image and sends it to the CCTV video server via the video transmission cable (RG59). Note that video servers typically work with analog systems, but may also work with digital systems.

The CCTV video server processes the video data; it compresses it using a codec. Typically, a CCTV video server will use multiple codecs. For example, the server can use the mjpeg technology to save the video image of the camera to the HDD, but for videos that can be viewed over the Internet, H.264 can be used to “transfer” the video to the destination.

In addition to settings, CCTV usually does not use a monitor. Typically, its video source is processed (for example using H.264) and sent over the Internet, downloaded on the Internet and viewed on any compatible computer.

As you can see, the biggest difference between a DVR and a video server is that the image remains local to the DVR, while the CCTV video server digitizes the analog signal and makes it accessible through efficient streaming on the Internet. The CCTV video server experience has advantages and disadvantages. In the following paragraphs, we will mention a few of them separately.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of all CCTV video servers is the ability to watch analog video over the Internet. For analog systems, especially cameras, it is not possible to have a video server.

Another great benefit of CCTV video servers is that the device can save video images to their hard drive or send them to a DVR for recording to their hard drive and stream them simultaneously over the Internet. This may sound less impressive, because Safe Gold’s functional digital system makes it easy to do all of this and more. But this is a convenient way to use the old analog cameras with the Internet.

The disadvantage of using CCTV video servers and analog cameras is that if the Internet is down, you will not be able to access the system remotely. In addition, a slow connection will result in a very slow monitoring experience.

One last thing: Don’t confuse CCTV video servers with Network Video Recorders (NVRs). NVRs are not suitable for analog cameras; they are designed to support IP (Internet Protocol) cameras. NVRs are basically equivalent to DVRs for IP-ready cameras, while CCTV video servers simply prepare the camera’s video IP and broadcast it over the Internet.
